Discover Yacht Racing

This is your ticket to experience the adrenalin filled world of high performance yacht racing! You will receive a fun and action packed half day of hands on tuition during which you will get to perform all of the different roles required to crew these fast, maneuverable racing yachts.

The session will finish with the Big Race - you and your crew mates will pit your new found skills against the other yachts in the fleet as you engage in close quarter racing around a floating race track. This is a great half day experience that will show you what yachting is all about...those looking to put their feet up with a glass of wine need not apply!

Itinerary / Highlights

Your session will start with meeting your skipper and crew mates for the day over a hot drink, before heading to the yacht. The yacht is a modern Sigma 8 metre which is fast, maneuverable and easy to handle - the perfect vessel for your first taste of yacht racing!

You will receive a full safety briefing from your skipper who will issue you with a life jacket and, if the weather requires, oil skins. It is then time to take to the seas to commence your training which will include helming the yacht, sail handling, basic tactics and much more. It's then race time! The fleet of up to six yachts will line up for a twenty minute race around a floating race track where you can prove that your crew has the skills and teamwork necessary to finish first.

Your session will finish by heading back to shore where you will no doubt be recounting tales of your epic battles upon the high seas before a debrief and official race results.

Restrictions:
Minimum age is 18.
Maximum weight is 16 stone.
You will require a reasonable level of fitness. Non swimmers are welcome but please inform the skipper during the safety briefing.

Duration:
This is a half day experience that will last around 3.5 hours in total.

What to Wear / Equipment:
Life jacket and sailing gear is provided by the centre. If it is cold dress up warm - layers are best, if it is hot don't forget your sun screen! You should wear soft soled shoes eg: trainers or deck shoes.

Group Size / Spectators:
There will be a maximum of five crew and a skipper on each yacht.

Weather:
Sailing can be affected by weather conditions, please call the centre the day before your experience to check it is going ahead.

Availability:
Available weekends April - October. Events can be arranged in the week for groups.
