The RYA Diesel Engine Course covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of the diesel engine and aims to leave students with the ability to carry out minor repairs to their yacht. You will also learn how to get your boat home safely should you suffer engine failure at sea.

The course includes an introduction to the main systems of a marine diesel engine and how it functions, looking at the four stroke cycle, fuel system, air systems, turbo-charging, cooling systems, engine lubrication, electrical systems, spares, tools, winterisation and servicing.

In the practical section of the course, students will learn to name the parts of the engine, trace the fuel and air systems, identify and strip filters, bleed the system and check for water ingress and air leaks. Students will learn to identify air filters, breathers, impellers, sea strainers, sea-cocks and thermostats, change filters and drain oil.

You will also be able to identify the starter motor and alternator, fuses, warning beepers, temperature and fuel gauges and will receive practical instruction on fault finding and fixing.

The Sunsail RYA Diesel Engine course is split into theory and practical sections, designed to cover all aspects of engine maintenance and repair. The course provides you with the knowledge and understanding of how to get your boat home safely should you suffer engine failure whilst at sea.

The theory section of the RYA Diesel Engine course includes an introduction to the diesel engine, covering the four stroke cycle, fuel and air systems, turbo charging, cooling systems, engine lubrication, electrical systems, spares, tools, winterisation and servicing.
